California festival Coachella officially began in 1999, billed as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Organisational problems resulted in no Coachella in 2000 but the festival returned as a one day event in 2001. 2002 saw Coachella return to a two day format with an attendance of around 55,000. The festival was gaining traction and worldwide interest and press, and 2003 featured Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys as headliners, as well as a reunion of Iggy Pop and The Stooges, resulting in a crowd of around 60,000. Coachella had arrived. It was established as a yearly festival and it grew in stature by the year. From 2012 demand meant the festival was staged over two seperately ticketed weekends, and it was announced also that a deal had been reached with the local city of Indo that would ensure Coachella and Stagecoach festivals there until 2030. In line with many major festivals Coachella has widened the variety and genres of the acts offered and attendances have proven the popularity of that decision. In addition to live music Coachella also offers a platform to a variety of arts and performance types and extra stages and performance areas have been added over the years.
